Wrongful death lawsuit alleging AI character encouraged minor's suicide
In October 2024, a Florida family filed a lawsuit against Character.AI alleging that an AI persona on the platform groomed and encouraged their 14-year-old son, who subsequently died by suicide. The lawsuit alleges the platform used addictive engagement design knowing the majority of its user base is under 18.
"The complaint alleges Character.AI designed its product to be intentionally addictive to children and failed to implement adequate safety measures despite knowing its user base was predominantly minor."

A note on legal complaints
Filings and BBB complaints reflect what customers and counterparties alleged — not what was proven in court. Where possible we link to the original public record so you can read the source yourself. The presence of complaints doesn't establish wrongdoing; the absence doesn't prove innocence.
If you've personally filed a complaint or know of a public action we've missed, tell us.
